Since the last post I have seen two things that have registered with me about starling behavior. The first is that they will eat rack salt or halite. After our small snow fall of a week ago I saw several of them on a downtown Baltimore sidewalk eating the little pebbles tossed on the sidewalk to ease pedestrian traffic. I initially thought there must be small pieces of discarded human food. I looked closely and for several minutes and found only the halite.
The second thing I discovered is that while starlings will bully other backyard birds at the feeding posts, the red breasted woodpecker not only does not back down but actually is the species doing the bullying in this matchup.
